SITUATION OF THE THAI ELDERLY 2013

As of 2013, Thailand had a total population of approximately 66 million, comprised of 64 million Thai citizens and those non-Thais in the Civil Registration system. The remainder of two million non- Thais outside the Civil Registration system mostly include crossborder migrant laborers from neighboring countries. The total of 64 million Thais and registered persons has remained fairly constant in recent years, with a growth rate of only 0.5% per year (compared with over 3% per year 40 to 50 years ago). Nevertheless, despite the relative stable number of the population, the proportion of the elderly of the total is increasing at a rapid pace: As of 2003, the number of persons in Thailand age 60 or over reached nine million, or 14% of the total.
