During the last 50 years Thailand has undergone dramatic changes through a demographic transition from high to low fertility and mortality, as well as an epidemiological transition from epidemic and communicable diseases to chronic and degenerative diseases. These changes have resulted in the transformation of the nation from a young society to an aging one. The challenge to Thailand’s sustainable development has shifted from the rapid increase in a young population in the past to the rapid increase in the old age population in the present, which is set to continue for the next 20–30 years.
